Pedalling as fast as I could, I rode through the dunes. That night’s dream was still in my head. It felt like I’d really been there, at the bottom of that beach shoebox. But that was impossible. I never dream about real things.

I parked my bike next to the wooden walkway and crossed it to the beach. It was overcast and the air smelled of grey salt. The wind made my hair stand up. The waves were thundering.

I walked straight to the hole. It was even deeper than two days ago and I couldn’t understand how Jasper hadn’t noticed it.

I looked around. There were dogs and joggers and kids playing football on the beach, but nobody was looking at me. I knew I was going to do something weird. It wasn’t fun weird, but I still had to do it. If I did it now for real, just once, I’d never dream about it again. I never have nightmares about real things.

I climbed into the hole and lay down on the cold sand. I stretched my legs out, crossed my arms over my chest and closed my eyes.

In the hole I was sheltered from the wind, but above me I could hear the air rushing and the seagulls screeching. And through it all, in the background, never stopping, the boom of the frothing waves.

I opened my eyes.

Lying down in a hole to see what it felt like was crazy. Because when I really died, I wouldn’t feel anything any more.

And suddenly I understood.
